Hello, everyone. My name is Kyle Stoutenberg and I am currently a student at the University of Northern Iowa double majoring in Digital Media Production and Digital Media Leadership with a minor in marketing. I transferred to the University of Northern Iowa during the Fall semester of 2014.
When I transferred to UNI I had no interest in cameras or producing visual content; I was an audio guy. I would spend days producing my two favorite genres of music: EDM and classic hip hop. It wasn't until I took my first production class at UNI that I realized how much I actually enjoyed using a camera, so I bought an entry level DSLR in the spring of 2015 to pursue my interest in video production.
After I bought a DSLR, I found out that I didn't really produce as many videos as I thought I would have when I got it. It kind of fell to the side and was only brought out when I had class projects. However, that all changed after my summer internship in 2015.
I had the opportunity to intern at Cumulus Media, a radio company in Des Moines, during the summer of 2015. I was able to pursue my interest in audio production by voicing and producing radio spots for some of their clients. Besides producing audio content, the interns were also given the task to capture images of popular locations/venues around Des Moines for content that could be used on their website and social media. So for a couple days I would go downtown and take some of the images that were wanted. I fell in love. I started bringing my camera more often and was able to take images of events that Cumulus could use.
After taking pictures during my internship, I started taking more photos for fun. I would bring my camera everywhere, capturing images in order to learn more about photography. Photography quickly became my favorite pass time.
It wasn't until I was asked by my cousin to do a photo shoot that I became addicted to photographing people in their natural setting. Eventually, this led to my love for lifestyle photography where I could capture raw emotion from people by photographing them in situations that they experience in their day-to-day lives. Whether that be photographing couples going for a walk in the woods or photographing a filmmaker in their natural habit; lifestyle photography allows me to capture a moment in that person's life through a photo.

In this blog I hope to help beginners become better photographers by sharing some of the things I have learned during my journey as a lifestyle photographer.
